IPAM provisioning failed

After installing the IP Address Management (IPAM) Server feature on Windows Server 2012 R2, at the end of the wizard to provision IPAM, you might receive the error: “Provisioning IPAM has failed. Check inner exception for more details. Some or all identity references could not be translated.”.

When looking in the event log (Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > IPAM > Admin), you see a similar error.

This error is not clear at all since it does not give any details. But you might want to check if you are not installing IPAM on a Domain Controller, as this is not a supported scenario.

Microsoft could do a better job here and at least produce a warning at the moment when you are installing this feature on a Domain Controller.

  • this error is raised because you try to provision it on a Domain Controller. By design IPAM can not be installed on a DC.
    On Technet, Microsoft writes:

An IPAM server is a domain member computer.

You cannot install the IPAM feature on an Active Directory domain controller.
You could get more information here.
